GSM
GSM stands for genitourinary syndrome of menopause. It is a collection of symptoms that affect the vulva, vagina, and urinary tract that occur when estrogen levels decline during perimenopause and menopause. Symptoms include vaginal dryness, burning, itching, pain during intercourse, and urinary issues such as persistent urgency or recurring infections.
Unlike hot flashes, which often improve on their own over time, GSM symptoms often worsen if left untreated. The encouraging aspect is that GSM is extremely treatable, with options ranging from vaginal moisturizers and lubricants to low-dose local estrogen therapy. You do not have to accept GSM symptoms as an inescapable part of aging.
