Localized HRT
Localized HRT is hormone therapy that is applied directly to a specific area of the body, most often the vagina and vulva, rather than entering the bloodstream in high doses. It typically comes as a vaginal cream, suppository, ring, or tablet. Because the hormones stay concentrated in the tissue where they are applied, localized therapy is highly effective for symptoms like vaginal dryness, painful sex, and urinary urgency without impacting your whole body the way systemic therapy does.
This is an important contrast for women who either can't or prefer not to use full-body hormone therapy. Localized vaginal estrogen is considered safe for most women, including many breast cancer survivors, because the amount absorbed into the bloodstream is very small. It doesn't require a progestogen to protect the uterine lining the way systemic estrogen does.
