Testosterone

Testosterone is generally perceived as a male hormone, but women also produce it, just in smaller amounts. In women, testosterone is made primarily in the ovaries and adrenal glands, and it plays an important role in sexual desire, arousal, energy, muscle strength, and overall sense of well-being.

Testosterone levels gradually decline as you age, and the decrease can become more noticeable during and after menopause. Low testosterone in women is connected to decreased libido, reduced arousal, fatigue, and difficulty reaching orgasm. While testosterone therapy for women is not yet FDA-approved in the United States (though it is in some other countries), it is used outside its labeled indication and is supported by growing research. A menopause specialist can support you in determining whether or not it is appropriate for your situation.
